This compound gyroscope is made of polished brass and is mounted on a heavy cast iron tripod base. The 4" diameter gyroscope wheel is mounted in the center of a 2-gimbal ring assembly, with pins to hold it in a fixed vertical, horizontal or any position desired. Also included is a counterbalance weight that is attached to the outer gimbal to demonstrate the effect of applying force at a right angle to the axis of rotation. A variety of motions and ratios can be manipulated and measured with this complex tool. This gyroscope was made by V. Grund in Praha (Prague) and used for demonstrations of gyroscopic principles in an early University.
