A 19th Century English Brass Camera Lucida. The camera lucida is an artist optical drawing aid used extensively by famous portrait drawing artists during the renaissance period and up to the invention of photography. This 19th century fine instrument consists of a large prism (15 mm), two lenses to correct for the visual acuity of the user, a hinged eyepiece with aperture and a telescoping extension rod with a table clamp. The inner stem of the extension rod is marked with D for drawing distant objects and 2, 3, 4, etc. for objects that are at a distance of 2, 3, 4 etc. feet away. This camera lucida comes in a velvet lined box (23 X 6.5 cm) with a copy of the original instruction note by Dollond. G. Dollond from St. Paul’s Church Yard in London sold the instrument.
