This Infant Weighing Machine was built by Salter for Boots. It is made of iron with a an iron rest for the wicker basket. The scale dial is brass with a pounds scale of between 0 -28 lbs. The face is marked: Boots Infant Weighing Machine No 50B Salter (trade mark) British Made. Jesse Boot, of Nottingham, England, inherited a combined herbalist and grocer's shop and by 1877 was calling himself a druggist. In 1880 he was known as a "Cash Chemist" . By 1883 he had ten shops. Brothers Richard and William Salter started making springs in 1760 in Bilston. In 1770 they moved to West Bromwich. By the 1920s Salter was manufacturing more than 90% of English balances.
