Chinese Seasonal Inclining Sundial. This is an accurate replica* of an original dial made in east China during the second half of the 19th century. The dial consists of a rectangular wooden dial-plate and a hinged hour-plate. A compass is set into the dial-plate. Marked around the compass is a scale divided into eight compass points and an outer scale divided into 24. The compass base is a silvered metal with a meridian line. The magnetic steel needle painted red at its South end, the whole covered by a glass plate. Beneath the hour-plate is a toothed ratchet scale with 13 divisions, marked in black. A brass strut attached to the back of the hour-plate is set in this scale to position the hour-plate. The front has an hour scale for Chinese hours. There is a brass rod gnomon that folds flat when not in use. Size: 11 X 5.5 cm. * We are generally loathe to offer replica or reproduction of sundials, but the original version of this sundial is easily into four digits, so here's a nice, economical alternative. |
