This very fine 18 century brass traveling Sundial on an eight-sided plate that measures 7.2 cm x 6.4 cm. It incorporates a compass with glass cover and a fine blued steel compass hand contained in its original leather box. This is a sophisticated Instrument in which the shadow is cast by an adjustable quadrant (adjusted from 40 to 60 latitude degrees) carried on a folding gnomon in the form of a small bird. The dial chapters marked in Roman numerals and signed 'C. Lang Lois Paris Au Niveau'. On the back side, 26 cities are marked by name and latitude. This dial is of a type named after Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) who worked in Paris.
