A Fine Collection of Antique Archimedean Drills. These tools were made to drill tiny holes and were used in fretwork and very delicate woodwork. Archimedean Drills were invented in mid 19th century as listed in 1859 by the US Patent office for the invention of ‘Spiral Drill’ and in the English catalog of Marples from 1864. Reciprocating movement of the lower sliding grip, which spins the spiral worm of the shaft, operates the drills. The Archimedean drills collection includes: 1) A 40 cm (16 inch) drill with molded brass sliding grip. 2) A 29 cm (11-½ inch) drill with knurled brass handle and 2 brass balls that extend horizontally to increase and maintain the velocity. 3) A 23 cm (9 inch) drill with brass sliding grip and 2 mm 4 Jaw chuck. 4) A 17 cm (7 inch) drill with brass fitting and 4 Jaw chuck. 5) A 10 cm (4 inch) delicate jeweler’s drill. |
