Pocket Transit (Brunton Compass) by Hilger & Watts. A Combination of Surveyor’s Compass, Clinometer and Hand Level. This rare traveling pocket transit (resembling Brunton Compass) was made to measure azimuth (compass bearing), vertical angles, inclination of objects, percent grade, slopes, height of objects and for leveling. The instrument consists of: A circle graduated to 360° for azimuth readings. Adjusting Screw for rotating the graduated circle. A compass needle with a sapphire jeweled bearing. A zero pin pointer for magnetic declination adjustment. Large and small sights with peep sight for azimuth and inclination sighting. A mirror and mirror center line for accurate azimuth measurements. Round and long levels attached to adjustable vernier for azimuth and inclination measurement. This transit was used very little and is in mint condition including the leather case and straps. Hilger & Watts started in 1857 as Watts & Son Ltd, makers of Surveying and Engineering Instruments in London. In about 1946 they merged with Adam Hilger and James Swift & Son, thereafter doing business as Hilger & Watts Ltd. and continued until about the mid-20th century. |
