Negretti & Zambra Cased Compass. This is a pocket/desk compass with a silvered dial. This instrument consists of a magnetized graduated dial card with 8 cardinal & intercardinal points, and a centrally inserted gem all of which are mounted on a sharp pivot at the center of the case so as to permit the card to rotate freely in the horizontal plane. The beveled glass can be rotated and thus fixes the movement. The compass is marked on the underside Negretti & Zambra London Round leather case is lined in blue velvet. H Enrico Angelo Lodovico Negretti (1817-1879) was an Italian optician born at Como and immigrated to London in 1829. He and Joseph Warren Zambra (d. 1877) became partners from 1850 as Negretti & Zambra. The company manufactured scientific instruments at different locations in London beginning in 1850 and continued to the mid-20th century. The compass is 5 cm in diameter, and 3 cm total height of case. |
