19th Century Sextant in original wooden box in excellent condition. Sextant Made for A & N.C.S.L (Army Navy Cooperative Stores Limited). This 19th Century sextant includes a polished mahogany case which has an empty brass cartouche on the top. The instrument is a brass No. 752, 6½ -inch radius with a scale on inlaid silver, divided in 10 arcminutes to 160° and is usable through 150°. With the vernier, the scale can read to 10 arcseconds. Included with the kit: an inverting telescope with two interchangeable lenses with the power of 11 and 3 and an erect long telescope (18.5 cm), 3 power for star sights, a sight tube with fitted eye shade. Also included are three removable color filter. The lid of the case carries a calibration certificate from the Kew Observatory in Surrey dated November 1895, that indicates - 0' correction across 60° on the scale, and +20' correction across 120°. The shades, mirrors, and telescopes are in very good to excellent condition. The box has a unique locking mechanism of brass rotating wheels. The top has a pierced crack caused by dryness. Army Navy Cooperative Stores Limited was formed in 1871 by a group of army and navy officers. The first store opened on 15 February 1872 at Victoria Street, London. This magnificent Sextant is also marked F. Ro. Willis which would probably have been the owner. |
