An Early 19th Century Lacquered Brass Pocket Sextant. This brass sextant is signed, ‘ W. & S. Jones, 30 Holborn, London’ and consists of a silvered scale (0-145 degrees) and vernier with magnifying lens. A revolving mirror and telescope that pulls out to allow direct view through green or brown filters. The instrument is made in a drum shaped case with screw on rear cover, in the original red morocco covered traveling case, 7 cm (2.75 inch) diameter. The eminent craftsman William and Samuel Jones were skilled optical instrument makers and succeeded their father in 1787. They worked at 135 Holborn Hill from 1794-95, at 32 Holborn Hill from 1796 - 1801 and at 30 High Holborn from 1802 – 1860, which helps to date the instrument to circa 1830. |
