A 19th Century Magnetic Compass And Clinometer. This is an extremely rare antique combination of a compass and a pendulum type clinometer in a lidded mahogany case. This instrument consists of a compass with magnetized needle mounted on a pivot at the center of a fixed graduated card so as to permit the needle to swing freely in the horizontal plane. When the lid is closed, a small lever raises the needle from the pivot and fixes its movement. The card is printed with a compass rose marked North by a ‘Fleur de lis’ and 32 directional arrows. The brass clinometer quadrant is marked with 0-90 degrees for North-South slope measurements. A bubble level is inserted in the East-West direction and two brass peep sights are mounted on the sides. Square box size 7.7 cm. (3.1 inches). |
