Early 19th Century Silver Mounted Shagreen Cased Drawing Instrument Set by Dollond. A museum quality Shagreen covered pocket wooden case with one silver rim and vacant cartouche containing a set of brass drawing instruments. Comprising of ivory double parallel rule, scale rule and protractor combined and brass arch-mounted ivory sector, brass and steel compasses and nibs. One instrument – a pencil and holder is missing and is replaced with a wheel-pen (not shown). Sector and scale are signed ‘Dollond London’. The case and lock in good condition (a bottom silver rim is missing). Size 17.5 cm. (7in.) long. Dollond London, a well known scientific instrument makers and opticians founded by John Dollond (1706-1761) the inventor of the achromatic lens for telescopes. His sons Peter (1731-1820) and John (1733-1821) continued the business. Reference: Drawing Instruments By Maya Hambly, Sotheby’s Publications.
