Collapsible Money Scales for 5 Different Gold Coins by Stephen Houghton & Son, Ormskirk. This is a unique brass self-raising steelyard type pocket coin balance. Made in England in the late 18th century with a system for weighing 5 different gold coins. The balance contains two separate swing-over counter weights and a 2-position slide weight, to provide a maximum of 6 different fixed weights. The hinges are protected with riveted silver plates and the coin is placed on a folding H shaped hanger. This type opens up when the hinged lid of its mahogany box is fully opened. Size: 135X38X18 mm. The original instruction label is pasted inside the box and provides also a table of current weights of the following Gold Coins: Guinea, Half Guinea, 7 shillings piece, Sovereign and Half Sovereign. The balance is signed by ‘Stephen Houghton & Son, Makers, Ormskirk, Successors to A. Wilkinson’, who worked in Kirkby (near Liverpool) in the second half of the 18th century. |
