Yarn Quality Assorting Balance made by George Thomas & Co. Manchester c. 1910. Yarn Balance is a balance scale that is used to determine how many yards (or meters) of a yarn are in one pound (or kilogram) of textile. Its purpose is to calculate how much yarn there is, in an unmarked skein. This unusual textile and Yarn scale is contained in leather covered box and presented in a purple velvet cushioned box. The instrument has its own lacquered brass stand with a scaffold and hook to attach a yarn of known length or swatches of textiles that are measured by 3 square metal templates that accompany the instrument. Each template is marked cotton, wool or linen. The top lid of the box is embossed: Thomas Standard Make, Universal (No. 1) Yarn Assorting Balance. Geo. Thomas & Co. Manchester.
