Salter’s Quadrant Spring Balance Scale. These scales were made to weigh between 0 and 112 lb., produced of cast iron with a spring-loaded rack and pinion mechanism that moves the dial pointer over a brass-graduated scale. An oval brass nametag is fixed to the front plate inscribed “Salter’s Quadrant Balance”. John Sylvester patented the scales in 1861 and in the 20th century, they were no longer approved for use, and gradually disappeared. Richard Salter established the Salter Company in 1782 in West Bromwich England, making pocket steelyards. By 1825 his nephew George had taken over the company, which became known as George Salter & Co, manufacturers of bayonets, scales and spring balances.
