‘CRESCENT’ Spring Postal Scale. Made in USA by ‘Pelouze Co., Chicago, Illinois. These scales were invented and patented by E.N. Gilfillan on June 2nd 1896 with a range of 0 - 16 oz. The dial indicates 6 different postal rates (in US cents) for Letters, MDSE (probably merchandize), Books Cir, newspapers and foreign letters. These postal rates were in use from 1885 until 1917, which helps to date the scale to circa 1900. The scale with an open spring-balance mechanism and calibrating screw, the weighing plate is chrome plated. |
