A 19th Century Candlestick Postal Scale. These are brass spring scales that were made by RW Winfield in Birmingham with a label stating: ‘No.170 JANUARY 13, 1840’ (This is the date on which the design was first registered). The brass was treated chemically to produce a dark brown patina. This top condition ‘candelabra type’ is one of the first models manufactured by RW Winfield with the introduction of the penny postage in 1840. Robert Walter Winfield worked in Birmingham from 1829 to 1860. His scales and balance factory was located on the Baskerville Estate. |
