Self-indicating 'Candle Stick' Spring Postal Scale dating to Victorian period to commemorate the appearance of the first mail stamp (January 13, 1840). The scale was made from brass by R.W. Winfield in Birmingham with one pan and a vertical compressible spring. These scales were termed 'candle-stick' scales and usually include two scales one to measure the weight in ounce (OZ) the other to indicate the equivalent postal rate in Penney (D). |
