A 19th Century Letter Postal Scale Balance by J&E Ratcliff, Birmingham. The scales are made of brass fixed to a Teakwood base. These are Roberval type scales with double upper and single lower crossbeams and comes complete with a set of stamped and verified circular brass weights 2, 1, 1/2, ¼, ¼ oz. Joseph & Edmund Ratcliff manufactured various types of letter scales and worked at St. Paul's Square in Birmingham between the years 1834 to 1864. In 1862 the older brother Joseph died and Edmund continued on his own until 1881. |
