A 19th Century Pocket Diamond Balance by De Grave, Short & Co. This fine and complete Traveling scale consists of a beam 11 cm (4.5 inch) long with swan neck ends, highly ornate suspension frame and tassel, indicator, knife-edge hinge, all made of cast iron, and two weighing brass concave panes. The scale is enclosed in a fitted teak wood case lined with purple velvet and with a hinged lid. In a separate lidded compartment with ivory handle, there are 14 weights ranging from 32 carets to 1/32 of a caret. On the inside lid is a label printed with the makers name and ‘A table by which maybe calculated the value of any weight of diamonds’. The De Grave Company was known from 1817 to 1844 as De Grave and Son, at 59 St Martin’s-le- Grand, London, from 1845 to 1871 as De Grave Short and Co, and from 1871 onwards as De Grave, Short, Fanner & Co. |
