18th Century Gold Ducat Coin Scale Balance made in Nuremberg. A unique and historically important coin scale made in Nuremberg Germany by Conrad Deinert between the years 1778 and 1789. The balance, in exceptional condition, was used without weights for the rapid weighing of the widespread Hungarian gold Ducat coin, as inscribed on the label: ‘Ein Waglein ohne Gewicht’ [a small balance without weights]. The balance has two brass pens suspended by delicate chains from the beam; one pen is heavier by exactly the weight of a Ducat, than the other pane. The balance is equipped with a quadrant scale (with 6 divisions) to measure the amount of underweight detected. In the center of one pan is a Ducat stamp showing St. Ladislaus (King of Hungary) standing and holding a battle-ax and orb, flanked on the sides by H.D (Hungarian Ducat). The master-sign of the balance maker (carriage wheel and initials AD) is stamped on the other pan. Reference: Bruno Kisch. Scales and Weights, A Historical Outline. Yale University Press, 1965.
