19th Century Mordan Postal Scales. The Brass scale is mounted on a black marble base the bottom of which is covered with red leather. This balance was built on the Roberval principle which employs upper and lower crossbeams.The letter plate has rates for the period 1871-1895 there are also three original weights of the more unusual dumpy design for 4 oz. 2oz and 1oz. The maker's trademark, S. Mordan & Co. London, is inscribed on the upper cross beam. The size of the base is 22 X 11 cm (8.6 x 4.3 inches) and the height is 10 cm (4 inches). Sampson Mordan was born in 1790 and died in 1843. S. Mordan & Co. ceased trading in 1941. |
