Important 19th Century Apothecary Beam Balance Scale by Avery Ltd. This semi-analytical apothecary scales consists of a 19 cm (7 ½ inch) brass equal arm beam with the maker’s name and boxed terminals with turned finials. The indicator and suspension frame are made of decorated brass with edged steel hinge. Brass chains hold one pane; a folding rod holds the other glass pane. The whole is mounted on the main upright pole system with elevating leaver. The main pole screws into a brass plate on the lid of the mahogany case. A drawer in the case contains 11 different apothecary weights. Case size: 26 X 13 cm (10 X 5 inches). Brothers William and Thomas Avery started their business in 1818 in Birmingham as ‘W & T Avery - Scale Makers’. In 1891 Avery was registered as a Public Limited Company – ‘Avery Ltd’. |
