19th Century Hand-Held Suspension Gold & Silver Scales by Stevens & Son. A very good 19 cm (7 ½ inch) steel beam with boxed terminals and turned finials. The indicator and suspension frame with the maker’s name are made of decorated cast iron with brass panes held by brass chains. This balance is enclosed in its original fitted mahogany box together with 15 assorted troy weights. Box Size: length 23.5 cm, width 12 and height 4.5 cm. The inside lid is stamped E. Halford & Son. Charles Stevens and his son William were known to work in 38 Goswell Road, London, from 1881. The name has also been seen on weights with Middlesex verification marks from around this time. E. Halford & Son was a family business in Northampton and has traded for 90 years in new and secondhand gold, silver and antiques. |
