Coin weight Box. A rare and important 18th Century Cologne box made of wood with 14 square recesses for 13 square coin-weights and 1 for 4 small grain-weights. The iron scale and brass pans are inserted in a cut-out long recess. The box is designed as a book, the top of the hinged lid is embossed with bookbinding tools to form flowers and a geometrical designs. 8 of the coin-weights are inserted in the lid and are closed by a sliding-panel as is the compartment for the grain weights. Above each recess is an ink inscription of the weight name. The scale pans are equal in weight but different in form, the one for the coin is a flat triangle with master sign of the Cologne maker (IG), the pan for the weight is a round basin. |
