Jerusalem Stanhope Concealed Dip Pen Letter Opener. This pen – letter opener is made with olive wood pierced and engraved in a traditional way with a metal nib hidden inside the handle. Inscribed ‘Jerusalem’ and contains a Stanhope lens and a picture of the Israelites in front of Mount Sinai. The Stanhope Lens is a cylindrical lens with spherical ends of different radii. The tiny transparent photograph was made by photomicrography. The lenses and photos were usually made in France and dated to the end of the 19th century. |
