Tortoiseshell Lorgnette Eyeglasses in Tortoiseshell Case Late 18th Century. This is an Adams Style Lorgnette made in England under the name ‘Pocket Spectacles’. Invented by George Adams Jr. (1750 – 1795) in the style of a penknife and intended to be carried loose in the pocket. The case is made from riveted carved and pierced real tortoiseshell. The Lorgnette frame is made of tortoiseshell with simple bridge and oval lenses. Small crack near the bridge. Provenance: From the Orr collection Inventory No. 78. Hugh Orr (1905 - 2002) was a collector and curator of the British Optical Association Museum. In 1985 he published the book ‘Illustrated History of Antique Spectacles’. The case/box is made of two large pieces of toirtosshell shaped as lid and botttom, and hinged together. There is a small split to one of the edges.
