The Schimmelbusch mask, for use with dripped fluid for anesthesia. It was designed by Carl Schimmelbusch of Berlin (1850-1895) in 1890. The mask consists of two hemispherical round bars attached to trough-like rim, handle, and oval metal gauze-holding device that rest in trough. With this mask the doctors were able to add chloroform throughout the operation as it became necessary, without having to remove the mask from the patients face. Bothe ether and chloroform were used in operations. Ether was first used in 1846 and chloroform in 1850. Use of Chloroform stopped almost entirely in 1900 because it was found to be dangerous.
