19th century English bloodletting instrument. This is a folding Fleam with 3 blades and brass shield. Contains 3 wide double-edged blades at right angle to the handles. Theis fleam could have been used on animals as well as humans. Bloodletting was based on an ancient system of medicine in which blood and other bodily fluids had to be maintained in proper balance or the body will be sick. Patients were thought to have an imbalance of their fluids, which was restored by bloodletting. |
