Early French 19th Century Complete Dental Kit by Charriere. An Early 19th Century Complete Dental Kit by Charriere. A rare, complete 16 piece dental kit made by the famous Joseph Frederic Charriere. The kit includes two foeceps signed by Charriere, cauteries, scalers, an elevator, an ebony handled tooth key with 3 replacement claws a small bakelite round box with tooth filllers, and more. All the instruments are fitted into a red felt lined mahogany case. The top has a brass cartouche engraved with the name Le Dr. Comte. The case has some wear and the lock does not seem to work. Joseph Frederic Charriere was born in Cerniat Switzerland in 1803 and came to Paris in 1816 as an apprentice cutler. In 1821 he took over from the owner at 34/35 court St Jean of Lateran. He specialized in the surgical instruments. His son succeeds him in 1852. He is irrefutably one of the most remarkable manufacturers of medical instruments of the 19th century. He developed the French, or Charriere gauge system used in sizing catheters and endoscopic equipment. The case measures 24 cm X 20 cm (9.5 inches X 7.8 inches).
