Palestine with the Hauran and the Adjacent Districts. The map was engraved by W. Hughes, Prof. Geogr(aph)y, Coll. for Civ. Engrs. A modern plan of Jerusalem is inset in the lower right corner. Published under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Copper plate engraved with original hand coloring. This unique map shows Palestine at the time of the Ottoman empire with many many subdivisions all hand colored, such as: Ghuzzeh (the Gaza area), el Kuds (the Jerusalem area), el Belka (Northern Jordan) and more. Many cities and towns are depicted, as are roads, rivers, and wadis. The map was drawn in 1843 by W. Hughes, and was printed in the 1850's by Edward Stanford of 6 Charing Cross London. Hughes used Robinson, Burckhardt, Jacotin and others as sources for this map. Size: 36 cm X 43cm (14X 17 inches)
