Elegant 19th century Graphoscope. This large, dual-purpose, Stereo Viewer is made of high quality ebonized wood with beautiful decorative tooling, for use on the tabletop. The Graphoscope folds down upon itself to form a shallow box for storage. When assembled, it may be adjusted in height to give a range of different viewing angles. The base measures 33.5 cm (13 ½ inch) long x 21.5 cm ( 8 ¾ inch) wide. The sliding card holder has an adjustable carved wooden back with brass supports that have ivory finials. The 1-¾ inch diameter stereo viewing lenses are used to view tissue or glass slides which can be inserted in front of a frosted glass, which allows diffused light to illuminate the stereocard. A 6-inch diameter, magnifying lens, mounted above the lenses, was used to examine photographs in detail.
