Jerusalem. The Complete Set of Stereocards By Underwood & Underwood 1895-1904. Underwood & Underwood began publishing stereographs in 1890 and established an educational unit in 1895. Around 1900 they introduced boxed sets, with specific themes such as education, religion, and travel, depicting tourist areas of the world. ‘Traveling in the Holy Land’ was a popular boxed set of 100 Stereocards from which a selection of 27 cards with pictures of historical sites in Jerusalem was selected. This special set is called ‘Jerusalem Through the Stereoscope’ and the cards (copyrighted 1895-1904) are consecutively numbered from 9 to 35 and are inserted in a twin book-like box (labeled volume I and II). Each card includes two Albumen prints photographed with a stereo-camera, a short description of the site and the company’s logo.
