Wooden Japanese Ruyi Scepter in the form of a Lotus. This is a baton carried as an emblem of authority. Ruyi in Chinese means ‘as you wish’ or ‘may your wish be granted’. Ruyi scepters in the stylized form of a lotus flower and stalk have traditionally been presented as birthday gifts. During the Qing dynasty it was customary for the Emperor to present deserving generals, nobles and ministers of state with gifts of jade ‘Ruyi’ scepters as a mark of favor. The lotus became a symbol of incorruptible honesty and purity, for which it was widely adopted as a motif on all kind of vessels. 44 cm in length (17.3 inches) |
