Map of The Environs of Jerusalem With Data by Captain Warren R.E. 1875. This antique English map of Judea and Samaria was published in: ‘Dr. William Smith’s Ancient Atlas’ and produced in 1875 by Stanford’s Geographical Establishment, London. Size (width X height): 33 X 49 cm (13 X 19 inch). Method: Steel Engraving with original hand coloring. This very rare and important map covers the environs of Jerusalem from Gophna, Ophrah and Bethel in the north to Tekoa in the south. From Beth-Horon in the west to Adummim on the way to Jericho on the east. The map shows the main mule trails (roads?) from Jerusalem to Hebron, Gaza, Jaffa and Jericho. Also shown are brooks, ancient aqueducts, tombs, valleys and villages of historical importance. The bottom part depicts a cross-section through the city of Jerusalem with cartographic data by Captain Warren R.E. Captain Charles Warren of the London-based Palestine Exploration Fund conducted the first excavations and survey in Jerusalem between 1867 and 1870. The results of this expedition were published in an initial report in 1875 and in a final full report in 1884. (Survey of Western Palestine By Colonel Sir Charles Warren R.E. and Captain C.E. Smith’s Atlas was Engraved and published in London by the partnership of Mr. Trelawney Saunders and Mr. Edward Stanford working at that time from No. 7 Charring Cross under the name: Stanford’s Geographical Establishment, London.
