'Plan of Jerusalem - In Russian'. Drawn and Published by F. Catherwood, 21 Charles Square Hoxton. Engraved by S. Bellin, sculp. Date Published: August 1st 1835. Production Place: London. Size (width X Height): 9 ½ X 12 inch. Original copper engraving. Scale: 800 feet to an inch (about 1: 9600). Map Description: This is one of the most important maps in the history of cartography of Jerusalem. The map is based on actual surveying measurements and accurate description of all religious and secular institutions, private and public buildings, burial grounds, water aqueducts and pools, archeological findings, roads and foot paths. This map was translated by various pilgrims' societies and was used for about 20 years as the main reference by Robinson and Smith (1838), Bartlet (1842), Kiepert (1845) and others. The biography of Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854), the English Architect and Explorer, was written by V.W. von Haugen and published by Barre (Mass.) 1968.
