This is an ash drill probably French, beautifully turned into a screw shape. The circular chuck is fitted perfectly into the grooves.Archimedean Drills were invented in mid 19th century as listed in 1859 by the US Patent office for the invention of ‘Spiral Drill’ and in the English catalog of Marples from 1864. Used for drilling holes in fretwork and delicate woodwork by reciprocating movement of the wooden sliding grip, which spins the spiral worm of the shaft and operates the drill. Overall length is 40 cm
