This is a museum quality 18th century steel 'sugar hammer' with floral decorative engravings and turned fruitwood handle. The metal artwork is typical of the period. During the 18th century, Sugar was sold in Europe as cones or large blocks until the creation of sugar cubes. This very old and unusual sugar hammer was used at home to break up large chunks of the crystallized sugar. It would be set out next to the sugar so that the lord of the manor can break off pieces to put in his tea. Length of handle 18.5 Cm (7 Inch).
