This is a hydrometer that measures the sugar content and potential alcohol of wine or beer. This Brewing Saccharometer contains a float and 5 weights which could be attached to the end of the float. The instrument is enclosed in its original mahogany box with verification marks of a Royal Crown over ciphers GR and number 553 (for Blackpool in Lancashire) which appears also on the float. The Aluminium thermometer is marked Dring & Fage Ltd. London. Custom & Excise. Also included is a glass measuring cylinder with spout. This saccharometer was probably made for Customs and Excise in Britain who, among other functions, levy the duty on alcohol. Dring & Fage were in business from 1790 to 1940.
