Antique ivory and brass Quill Cutter. This is a rectangular shaped quill cutter with brass fittings. There are three parts to this tool: A quill knife, a nibber, and a sliding blade for splitting the quill. A quill was inserted into the hole in the top of the tool when the cutter was applied it automatically shaped the quill tip into a nib. Then a split was cut into the new nib so that it will hold the ink. The brass is signed Rodgers Cutlers to the Queen and the star and Maltese cross. Joseph Rodgers & Sons was one of the largest and most prolific cutlery manufacturers based in Sheffield. The company was founded in 1682 and the star and Maltese cross mark was registered. In 1821 the company was granted the title Cutlers to the Royal Family. The cutter is in excellent condition. Overall length 10 cm (4 inches). Included a quill and Parker ink.
