This unusual large magnifying glass with high quality precision ground glass lens is 11.5 cm (4.5 inch) in diameter. The rim is nickel coated brass inscribed Hilkinson. The handle with hallmarked silver collar and ferrule, is crafted from naturally shed stag horn. The hallmarks are Sheffield 1905 (letter n) and M&W for Mappin & Webb. Also on the silver ferrule is a diamond English registry mark for the design. The letter I for Metal and the letter W for 1865. This magnifier provides a large field of view and allows for both eyes to be used. Overall length including handle is 28.5 cm. (11 inch). The Hilkinson brand was first established by E. Hill & Co Ltd in the early 1930's in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. Jonathan Mappin opened his first silversmith workshop in Sheffield in 1774. In 1849 the first store in London opened. In 1858 John Newton Mappin (the founder’s son) invited his brother-in-law, George Webb to join him thus creating the company of Mappin and Webb, though for the first 4 years they were called Mappin & Co. In 1898 they became a registered company adding ltd to the name. In 1963 Mappin & Webb was amalgamated in British Silverware Ltd together with Elkington & Co Ltd and Walker & Hall Ltd. Mappin & Webb factory in Sheffield was closed in 1971.
