This is a masterpiece ophthalmoscope made in late 19th century by Down Bros. the optical instrument makers, London. The instrument consists of a series of 29 lenses that moves by rotating the lower disk. The middle disk indicates the strength of the lens in the sight-hole. The upper disk provides supplementary lenses when needed. On the patient side, two reflecting mirrors (flat and concave) are interchangeable. The instrument handle is made with ivory and brass and contains a rotating papillary scale. The whole is inserted in a leather-covered box lined with purple velvet.
