Modern Jerusalem. Drawn and Engraved by: W. Johnston. Published by: W. & A. K. Johnston Limited, Edinburgh. Year Printed: 1892 in Scotland. Size (width X height): 7 inch X 9 ½ inch. Method and Color: Steel engraved, Color printed. Scale: 700 feet to an inch (about 1:5800). Map Description: This very accurate map shows detailed surface structure as well as single building blocks and roads. It was printed after the opening of the ‘New Gate’ (1887) in the northern wall and the inauguration of the main Railway Station (1892). The map shows the location of the French Consulate, the Ophthalmic Hospital (1886) and several buildings of Yemin Moshe (1891). The population of Jerusalem during the 1890’s totals approximately 45,000 most of them reside inside the old city.
